Facial Care

Facial Cleansers: Facial cleansers are formulated to clean our face to remove unwanted debris, such as dirt and oils, makeup, sunscreen, the remains of pollution, and dead skin cells. Cleansers aid in unclogging pores and exfoliating the top skin cells. Cleansers help keep your skin healthy and give you a fresh look. Cleansing helps anti-aging products and treatments work properly, helps maintain proper pore size, and provides a healthy boost of hydration. Cleansing helps manage pH levels of the skin, enabling sufficient water and product retention.

If you stop washing your face, according to “West Lake Dermatology,” pores would become clogged resulting in the development of serious acne. The skin could also experience a combination of severe redness, dryness, and irritation from insufficient hydration. Finally, your skin would generally appear dirty, oily, greasy, and significantly aged.

Most likely you would develop an incredible itchiness to the point where you would be forced to constantly scratch your face. This could lead to breaks of the skin which serve as entry points for infection. Moral of the story: practice proper skin cleansing!

How to choose the right facial cleansers:

  • Know your own skin type and choose a cleanser that is a good match. If you have dry skin, you will want to avoid cleansers with high alcohol content.
  • People with oily skin need a cleanser with a lower pH level.
  • Sensitive skin: you will want a basic cleanser free from heavy fragrance and additives.
  • The delivery type of the cleanser matters. Cream based cleansers are great for dry skin while gel or foamy cleansers are better for oily skin types.
  • If you wear a lot of makeup, you will want a cleanser targeted toward removal.
  • If you tend to sweat a lot from working out, look for a product targeting clogged pores.
  • If you have concerns with allergies, look for “natural” cleansers free of synthetic ingredients.
  • Most cleansers marketed as “gentle” are great for removing dirt without over drying and irritating the skin.
  • Selecting a cleanser with a balanced pH will help maintain your skins natural balance.
  • Make sure to take your time comparing products and looking at reviews. Essence of Nature LLC will be offering a variety of cleansers soon.
  • This also goes for men.
  • Cleanse your skin twice a day.
  • It is best to seek a dermatologist’s best advice.

Toners: In the beginning toners were formulated to just balance the pH and act as an astringent. Today toners do so much more than that. Toners nourish your skin; they give a boost of hydration; they replenish vital substances after cleansing. Toners prepare your skin to absorb the benefits of the products you will layer on after; they restore pH, and they shrink pores. Some toners act like a moisturizer, meaning some toners are humectants.  You can use them in between washes if your face feels oily, sweaty, or heavy.  It refreshes your skin. It reduces the signs of aging skin and minimizes acne. Toners are just as important as your cleanser.  It is all a matter of finding the right toner for your skin. Essence of Nature LLC makes several toners for all skin types. They will boost your beauty routine and provide you with the healthy skin you crave!

Serums: Serum is a skincare product you can apply to your skin after cleansing, but before moisturizing with the intent of delivering powerful ingredients directly into the skin. They slow down the aging process if they have anti-aging properties in them. Serums have a higher amount of ingredients that can penetrate deeply into the skin and deliver a high concentration of active ingredients into the skin; therefore some serums are pricey. It is like the Rolls Royce for your skin. Traditionally, serums are water based, eliminating oils all together.  Today people are using the word “serums” to denote products with oil in them. Not saying oils are bad; oils are lovely. They are just not serums.

Moisturizing: Applying moisturizer daily is key to healthy skin, no matter the skin type, age, and season. The healthier your barrier, the better your skin’s defense against inflammation and damage, which can protect skin from signs of dehydration, irritation, redness, and even dark spots, fine lines, and wrinkles over time. Use moisturizers twice daily morning and night, massaging it in. This will increase absorption and effectiveness and improve circulation. There are any number of moisturizers available on the market and not all products are suitable for your skin. It is important to find out the right moisturizer for yourself depending upon many factors, like your skin type, your age and whether you are suffering from specific skin conditions like acne, pimples, and eczema and so on. If you are not sure which moisturizer to use, see a dermatologist for best advice.

Exfoliating: Exfoliating can improve the appearance of your skin in several ways. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, exfoliation can leave your skin looking brighter, even, and improve the effectiveness of topical skin care products by enhancing absorption. They improve circulation and encourage skin turnover. Regular exfoliation can also help prevent clogged pores, resulting in fewer breakouts. There are different kinds of exfoliating methods and each have their own ways of removing dead skin cells.

Mechanical Exfoliators:

  • Exfoliating brush. This is usually a bristle brush used on the face or body to remove layers of dead skin cells. Some are designed for dry brushing. Others can be used with your facial cleanser or body wash.
  • Exfoliating sponge. These are a gentler way to exfoliate skin. You can lather an exfoliating sponge with warm water, soap, or body wash in the shower.
  • Exfoliating scrubs. These can be applied directly to the skin using a gentle, circular motion. You can wash your skin with warm water after applying the scrub.

Chemical Exfoliators:

  • Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs). Examples of AHAs include glycolic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids. These work by breaking apart bonds holding dull and dead skin cells on your skin’s surface. This will cause your skin to naturally shed dead particles.
  • Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs). Examples of BHAs include beta hydroxyl and salicylic acid. These may be better for acne-prone skin.

The type of exfoliant to use on your face depends on your skin type. To exfoliate your face mechanically with a scrub, apply gently to the skin with a finger. Rub in small, circular motions. Rinse with lukewarm water.

For a chemical exfoliant that is a liquid, apply with a cotton pad or washcloth. Work with a dermatologist to determine which type of exfoliation is safe for your skin.

When to stop exfoliating:

Stop exfoliating when you notice redness, inflamed skin, peeling, or irritation. Avoid exfoliation if you use certain medications or acne products, including retinol and benzoyl peroxide. These will make your skin worse.

Facial Steams: Whether you suffer from acne or have blemish-free skin, one of the best ways to cleanse facial pores is to steam your face. The warm steam causes your face to sweat, which opens the pores and helps soften the surface layer of dead skin cells, releasing dirt and debris that could be the cause of breakouts and would otherwise stay trapped. Steaming is also healthy for your skin. It also adds moisture to the face. It is hydrating, releases trapped sebum, promotes collagen and elastin, is soothing, and it is affordable. Steaming also helps with sinus congestions. Essence of Nature LLC offers herbal facial steams. You should steam at least once or twice a week. It is a great way to unwind and feel rejuvenated.  Before starting any new products always check with your doctor first (especially if you are nursing or pregnant).

 Tips for healthy skin:

  • Protect your skin from the sun. Long term sun exposure can cause skin cancer, age spots, wrinkles, and other skin issues. Wearing sunscreen is imperative.  Wear shades, brim hats and protective clothing.
  • Do not smoke. Smoking make your skin look older. It decreases blood flow, nutrition and makes the skin looks paler.  Smoking depletes the skin of oxygen; it damages skin collagen and elastin. In addition, smoking increases your risk of squamous cell skin cancer. If you smoke, the best way to protect your skin is to quit. Ask your doctor for tips or treatments to help you stop smoking.
  • Be gentle with your skin. Pat dry. Avoid strong soaps and detergents. Soaps can strip oil from your skin; instead, use a mild facial cleanser.
  • Eat a healthy diet. Drink plenty of water. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Some research suggests eating fish oil or fish oil supplements and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin.
  • Manage your stress. Stress can trigger acne breakouts and other skin issues. Steps to manage stress include spending time with nature. Take walks, jog, practice yoga, meditate, get enough sleep, drink a relaxing tea. Do things you enjoy and spend time with people who make you laugh.
  • Change and wash your pillowcase, head scarf, and bonnets often.
  • NEVER use the same towel you use on the body.
  • Wash your hair (oils from your hair run down into your face).

Bottom line: all these products work together to make us look good as we age. Take care of yourself.
